After briefly studying Politics and Administration in 2009 in her German hometown, Mannheim, and simultaneously working in restaurants, she abandoned formal education in pursuit of her new-found love of wine and the outdoor work. Her love of wine and agriculture led her to Andreas Schumann at the iconic biodynamic winery Weingut Odinstal where she quickly realised viticulture was her calling!

After finishing her bachelor in Viticulture & Oenology, while working her final year at another German winery, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, Philine then started working as a consultant for Simonit & Sirch, the well regarded Italian masters of sap-flow pruning. In 2015, she joined Martin & Marion at Pranzegg in Bolzano, and in 2016 she joined the team at Weingut Heinrich in Burgenland, Austria.

2019 then became the year to bring her own project to life, managing to buy Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes in Langhe via Luigi and Massimo Veglio, in 2020 she was finally able to rent 2 hectares in Preda, that Philine, along with Tom Myers (Cantina D’Arcy) split in two and cultivated side by side.

However, renting vines is like working with ‘half the handbrake on’, and so it was 2024, when Philine was able to acquire her own vineyards from Fernando Principiano, two sites: a small 0,35 hectares Nebbiolo da Barolo plot in Le Coste di Monforte, which thankfully was farmed organically prior, and the second quite close by planted with 0,35 hectares of Dolcetto.

Additionally, Philine was able to also purchase 1 hectare of south-facing land, located between Roddi and Verduno, half of which she planted to Nebbiolo. This was an excellent opportunity to finally implement her own vision of agriculture, planting using Keyline design and several layers of plants; cover crop, shrubs, vines & trees. The vines are trained in a pergola style (from good experience with Pranzegg!) to allow shading and give livestock the ability to graze underneath.

Philine’s friends at Pascoli d’Amaltea (who have by now also become our own friends too!) work and produce their much-acclaimed sheep and goat cheese on their property in Alta Langa and have collaborated with Philine to plant 0,3 hectares in 2023, of first the rootstock which then was grafted to mainly Chardonnay. Using biodynamic and regenerative agriculture principles this again is pergola trained to work in harmony with the busy farm and herd of sheep and goats.

As mentioned above, being able to undertake her own agricultural visions means much more control in her work. Philine has been working to understand the soil and plant microbiome through the SoilFoodWeb school of Dr. Elaine Ingham and various courses by John Kempf, and so, alongside her Simonit & Sirch pruning she is striving for balance and harmony, to create excellence in the fruit to achieve pure, vibrant, textures, well-structured and intellectual wines.

Philine’s knowledge is immense and inspiring (follow her Instagram and learn a thing or two!), but most importantly she is forever charming and great company. Naturally her wines are making big waves in the devoted followers of Barolo. The quantities are tiny and the demand is way too big. But whenever you get a chance to drink a bottle – Take it!
